Marin Cilic v Attila Balazs Head to Head
23rd-ranked Cilic hasn’t clashed with Attila Balazs at any level before this.

Cilic Far From Convincing in Recent Paris Trips
Marin Cilic has been one of a handful of big players who have enjoyed a career resurgence in the last 12 months. After ending his three-year title drought last summer on the lawns of Stuttgart, he would add another trophy to his cabinet just a few months later when he triumphed at St. Petersburg indoor hard courts.
Those results have done wonders for Cilic’s climb in the rankings. At this time last year, he sat at his lowest ATP ranking for eight years as he struggled dearly to get wins under his belt. But tennis can be such a quick turnaround sport.
Cilic sits on the verge of re-entering the world’s Top 20 and could do so with a good run at the French Open. The Croat is a two-time quarterfinalist at the Paris slam but surprisingly, has not advanced beyond the second round in his last three trips.
Cilic’s draw this year includes a possible third-round meeting against Pablo Carreno Busta and potentially Daniil Medvedev thereafter. So if he is to repeat his exploits from 2018, he could need to run the gauntlet.

Balazs Uses Protected Ranking To Get In Main Draw
Attila Balazs is among a handful of players using a protected ranking to play in the main draw of this year’s French Open. The Hungarian veteran made his return to action for the first time since the 2021 Australian Open at the Ostrava Challenger last month.
It took a while for him to find his match rhythm and was able to pick his first win at his subsequent tournament in Mauthausen, but retired in his quarterfinals whilst trailing Jurij Rodionov 6-4 3-0 due to injury.
Balazs’ career is mired with a litany of injuries. He once quit the sport altogether in 2014 as a result of it and only for him to launch his career for the second time in 2016.
He has gradually worked his way into the Grand Slam main draw reckoning in recent years. And at 33, he is playing in the main draw of the French Open for the second time.
Balazs holds fond memories of the Paris slam. He scored his first main draw win at a Grand Slam in the 2020 edition of the event. Can he pick up a surprise second on Sunday?
Cilic v Balazs Prediction and Tip
Attila Balazs has been tormented by injuries throughout his career. And it is not of great surprise that he comes into Sunday’s match under a cloud of uncertainty regarding his fitness. Cilic should move unscathed.
