All Eyes On Nadal Fitness in Opener

21-time Grand Slam winner and 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal begins his quest for more Roland Garros and Grand Slam glory.

Winner of the Australian Open this January and going ahead of arch rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the slam count, Nadal would typically start as a heavy favorite here, given his track record here.

However, starting the clay season late due to rib injury at Indian Wells followed by a troublesome foot that saw him lose out to Denis Shapovalov in Rome have all put a cloud around Nadal’s chances at Roland Garros.

With Novak Djokovic looking close to his best again and Carlos Alcaraz having risen to being a serious contender, Nadal does find himself with a group of serious contenders this time around.

The luck of the draw with Djokovic and Nadal in the same quarter and Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in their half does make for a difficult ride in addition to the pre-existing injuries for the King Of Clay.

That being said, one can never underestimate the man who has ruled this court like no one has anywhere and with a few good wins under his belt early will put him right back where he belongs, a serious contender for #14.

Uphill Task For Thompson

Ranked just within the top 100, Jordan Thompson of Australia brings a 7-11 season record to the tournament. He was a quarterfinalist in Dallas and has otherwise not been past the second round of any tournaments this year.

The Australian has never been a threat on clay as he prefers playing on faster surfaces.  This season has been no different as be brings a 1-4 clay record to Roland Garros

Thompson also featured in a few ATP challengers on clay and did not meet with much luck with a 1-3 record there.

Having never been past the third round of the French Open (2019), this major has not particularly been a happy hunting ground for the Aussie and running into Rafa Nadal in the opener makes the task that much more insurmountable.

Nadal v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Despite all the focus on Nadal’s foot, there should not be much doubt around him starting this match as a huge favorite.

Although Nadal may not be the overwhelming favorite this time given the presence of Djokovic and Alcaraz, he should still make it through to the second week untroubled.

Nadal to begin the quest for Roland Garros #14 in straight sets.
