Fritz Hasn’t Played Since Monte-Carlo Masters

Fritz has been out of action since featuring at the Monte-Carlo Masters, having missed a couple of Masters competitions in Madrid and Rome and also giving Barcelona Open the skip.

In the two tournaments that Fritz did play on clay, he won a match at Houston and reached the quarterfinal in Monte Carlo before Alejandro Davidovich Fokina got the better of him. A left foot injury after that ended his time on court for nearly a month and a half but he is now back and hopefully at his fullest fitness.

The American had earlier shocked the world with an Indian Wells Masters triumph, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final but on clay his performances haven’t been up to the scratch.

His career record on clay stands at 24-23, which by itself isn’t that bad but the fact he has played just 47 matches on clay as compared to more than 200 on hard court surfaces underlines where his preferences lie.

The question here is if he can shrug his injury away and carve out a victory?

Qualifier Taverna Makes Maiden Grand Slam Entry

22-year-old Taverna will be making his main draw debut in any Grand Slam after scraping through two of his three qualifying wins. And given his record on clay, things could get interesting, especially if his first round opponent shows signs of having not fully recovered from his injury issues.

Santiago Fa Rodríguez Taverna has grown rapidly, and his ranking chart exhibits those signs too.

Not too long ago last year, Taverna was ranked 552nd on the ATP Rankings but has leaped up 350 places to settle in at his current level of 203rd. And having made it through to his first Grand Slam here, the Argentinian can be expected to rise a little further on the charts.

What needs to be seen is if Taverna can convert his form on the lower circuit into a win here – he has already made one conversion, i.e. followed up six Futures competitions wins with his maiden Challenger victory.

Tough step-up but the fear factor will be missing.

Fritz v Taverna Prediction and Tip

No surprises for guessing that Fritz starts off 3/20 favourite here but given his own rustiness because of an injury layoff and his opponent’s rapid rise, we could see a fighting encounter.
