Putintseva Solid on Clay This Season

While Putintseva has had to struggle a tad in hard court tournaments this season, she has turned things around on clay heading into this year’s French Open.

The Kazakh eased her way through to the second round in Charleston to kick things off but her strongest showing came in Istanbul where she reached the semifinals. Wins over Magda Linette, Rebecca Peterson and Ajla Tomljanovic would have helped regain some of that confidence too.

At Madrid, Putintseva sent Shelby Rogers packing in the first round but couldn’t match up to Cori Gauff’s strength but most importantly got the better of Garbine Muguruza in Rome en route a third round appearance.

That showing in Rome, which also included a victory over Kaja Juvan came as a qualifier.

What Putintseva will now hope for is to kick-start this competition with a solid showing that helps her better her previous year’s French Open one – she had been knocked out in the first round last year.

Bara Scrapes Through to Main Draw

When you have never been in the top 100 of the WTA rankings in your career, each qualification for the main draw of a Grand Slam event seems like a big deal. Having already made it to the first round at Australian Open earlier this year, Bara will now hope she can do one better than that – win that rare match at a Grand Slam.

That said, Bara’s best showing at a major came at Roland-Garros when she made it through to the third round of the 2020 edition.

Her performances in the qualifiers, however, would have left a lot to desire.

Bara needed three-setters against both Jesika Meleckova (ranked 257th in the world) and Selena Janicijevic (ranked 351st) before finally getting herself a straight-set, but another hard-fought win over Nao Hibino in the third round of qualifiers. In all three matches, Bara had gone in as a heavy favourite.

She will hope to put up a challenge against Putintseva here.
