David Goffin v Jiri Lehecka Head to Head

They played once before and it happened this year in Monte-Carlo. Goffin won that match 6-4 6-3.

Goffin’s Comeback This Season

David Goffin had a very poor 2021 season struggling with form early in the year and suffering a knee injury in Halle that left him unable to compete at a high level in the 2nd part of the year. This year has been his comeback as the Belgian was able to capture a trophy after a long time in Marrakech.

He also performed rather well on clay posting a 12-4 record on the surface and a 20-14 record overall. Goffin has always been solid on clay despite his Roland Garros record being a mixed bag. His best result as a quarterfinal in 2016 with the last two appearances ending in the first round.

This year will give him a chance to right that wrong with a matchup against Lehecka, a player he beat this year already. Keep reading if you want to find out whether his form, which has taken a slight dip lately, will be enough to win him the match.

Breakout for Lehecka

Jiri Lehecka made a name for himself on the challenger tour last year coming fairly close to breaking inside the top 100. It came this year with several notable results such as the one in Rotterdam where he reached the semifinal. Lehecka is noted for his clay expertise thanks to his good serve and bold attacking play.

He is 23-17 on the year and 13-7 on clay with some solid performances. The Czech players has been playing very well leading up to this event reaching a final on the challenger tour on clay. Now, he will have a chance to test himself on the red dirt of Roland Garros.

This is his maiden experience at Roland Garros so expect him to be a bit nervous and tight to start. Eventually, he will settle but that could prove crucial against someone as experienced as Goffin.

Goffin v Lehecka Prediction and Tip

David Goffin has been one of the best players on clay this year and he’s been very consistent. He had some bad performances but for the most past a 3-set match at the Roland Garros should give him enough time to consolidate any jitters.

Lehecka for the most part needs a lot more experience at these types of events before he can dream of a long run. It has happened before but I don’t see him as that good. He should have enough to challenge Goffin, perhaps even win a set but nothing more.

I expect Goffin to take care of business and move on to the 2nd round for the first time in three years.
