Fabio Fognini v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Fognini brings a 1-0 lead over Popyrin, having beaten the Aussie at the Swiss Indoors in 2019.

Encouraging Results For Italian On the Clay

Playing in his 15th Roland Garros main draw, Fabio Fognini will be looking to arrest a downward spiral in results when he takes on Alexei Popyrin. Fognini rarely falls in the first hurdle at the clay slam, and memorably reached the quarterfinals back in 2011.

The 34-year-old Italian who has slipped outside the world’s Top 50, has only won once from his last five matches – easily his worst sequence of results this season and will be keen to snap that streak.

However, Fognini has won nine matches in total on the clay in the build-up to Roland Garros and that is a decent return that should establish some much-needed momentum ahead of his first-round match.

Fognini had his mind focused on Paris last week as he lost in straight sets to Thanasi Kokkinakis in Geneva. And while the Italian can blow hot and cold occasionally, he should be the favorite to outlast Popyrin on Sunday.

Popyrin Wins Bordeaux Challenge

While Fognini has struggled in recent weeks, Alexei Popyrin has been a man on a mission. The big-hitting Australian captured the Bordeaux Challenger a week ago – just his second title at that level.

It will be intriguing to see if Popyrin has managed to turn his season around. He looked lost in the first few months of the year when he lost six straight matches. After dropping out of the world’s Top 100, he took the bold step to return to Challenger tennis and his decision has been a positive one.

Popyrin’s title win on the clay of Bordeaux, a little over 300 miles from Paris, was a victory against the odds. He shocked the likes of Carlos Taberner and Jaume Munar en route to the title match where he beat Quentin Halys.

To put his results into context, the 22-year-old played four straight three-setters to walk away with the trophy and is now within touching distance of the world’s Top 100.

Fognini v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Popyrin will fancy his chances of going toe-to-toe against the Italian. That title win will most certainly rekindle his season and we reckon this could be a very complicated afternoon for the World No. 52.
