Sydney International Tennis Women’s & Men’s Draw:
The women’s draw of the tournament will see defending champion Angelique Kerber joined by Simona Halep and the US Open winners Naomi Osaka and Sloane Stephens. While the top two seeds Halep and Kerber have a first round bye, the rest of them will feature in that opening round.
Among others in action are Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova, Kiki Bertens and Daria Kasatkina, all of whom will look to fine-tune their preparations heading into the 2019 Australian Open.
Halep will face the winner of a tough opening round encounter between Jelena Ostapenko and Ash Barty while Kerber takes on either Camila Giorgi or Ajla Tomljanovic. In what could, however, be the match of the first round, Petra Kvitova, also the fifth seed, has been drawn to face Aryna Sabalenka, a potential Grand Slam winner for the future.
Fourth seeded Sloane Stephens will face a qualifier, sixth seeded Pliskova takes on Lesia Tsurenko, Bertens, the seventh seed will be up against Anatasija Sevastova while Kasatkina takes on a qualifier in both, her first and second round.
In the men’s section of the draw, Stefanos Tsitsipas will lead the way as the top seed along with the defending champion and second seed Daniil Medvedev. Both of them have a first round bye.
Tsitsipas will face one of Matthew Ebden or Nicolos Jarry in round two while Andreas Seppi, the eighth seed could be his quarter-final opponent. Medvedev will be up against either Adrian Mannarino or Jordan Thompson in his second round match Alex de Minaur could be waiting for him in the last-eight.
Third seeded Diego Schwartzman could take on Denis Kudla while Gilles Simon, the fourth seed, will be up against Malek Jaziri or Sam Querrey in their second encounter – both the seeded players getting byes to the second round.
