Daniel Has Caused a Few Upsets This Year
Taro Daniel has had his moments this year. A win over Andy Murray in the Australian Open took him to the third round of the event. That was followed by a win over David Goffin in Dubai.
The Japanese player’s best this year was a quarterfinal appearance in Belgrade. He came through the qualifiers and then knocked out Dusan Lajovic and Holger Rune in three sets each to reach the last eight, where Andrey Rublev ended his run.
Overall, Daniel is 6-3 on clay this year from all levels, including qualifiers. At the tour level, he has been the most successful on clay, with a 43.8% win record. His only tour-level title also came on the surface, in Istanbul in 2018.
The 29-year-old will be making his fifth main draw appearance in Roland Garros. He has won his opening round matches on two occasions and exited the first round twice. Can he making a winning start this year?

Barrere Receives a Wild Card
Gregoire Barrere will be making his sixth main draw appearance at Roland Garros after the World No. 209 received a wild card for his home slam.
The 28-year-old has played just one match at the tour level this year and that was in Lyon last week, where he qualified for the main draw. He however fell to Ugo Humbert in the first round.
He has done well at the Challenger level though. Barrere was a finalist on the hard courts of Quimper in January and then reached a clay court final in Aix-en-Provence this month.
Barrere has won just one match at the French Open in his career and that was in 2019. The Frenchman has a 1-8 record on clay at the tour-level. He doesn’t have a great record at the Challenger level either, but has won four of his six ITF titles on clay.
Daniel v Barrere Prediction and Tip
Daniel is the superior player. He is far more experienced and has an 8-8 record at the tour-level this season, while Barrere is 0-1. Daniel will be the favourite to win and advance into the next round.
