Alexander Zverev v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two, with that encounter having coming in 2022 itself. Zverev had beaten Baez in straight sets, winning 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the second round of the Rome Masters two weeks ago.

Zverev Offloads Ofner in Opener

It was never expected to be a difficult match-up for Zverev first up and that’s how the French Open campaign for this year has started off for the German.

Zverev registered a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win over Sebastian Ofner in an hour and 50 minutes, slamming 13 aces in the process. What made it an even more clinical win for Zverev was the fact he faced not a single break-point in the encounter, while breaking his opponent four times from the 15 breaking opportunities he had.

The German had come into this competition on the back of a series of solid performances but those which hadn’t seen him win a single title on clay. In Rome, for instance, he fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinal.

The world number four also lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final at Madrid, complaining about the late night matches, while having earlier gone to Tsitsipas in Monte-Carlo as well.

Can he rumble on in this year’s French Open and go the distance?

Baez Continues to Impress

He is just 21 years of age and has already quietly moved to his career-best ranking of 36th in the world. Baez, who won his first ATP title at Estoril earlier this season, then moved to the second round here for the first time with a four-set win over Dusan Lajovic in his opener.

Baez defeated Lajovic in two hours and 28 minutes, clinching it 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round and set up a potentially, mouth-watering clash with Zverev.

There wasn’t too much to choose between the two as far as the first and second serves were concerned but where Baez scored over his opponent was his conversion of break-points.

The Argentine got himself just six chances and broke his opponent five times. On the other hand, Lajovic had 15 of them and failed to convert 12 of those.

Can Baez reduce the chances he had offered in his opener when he takes to court for round two though because unlike Lajovic, Zverev wouldn’t let go of them.

Zverev v Baez Prediction and Tip

While Zverev is a heavy favourite, there’s a chance of Baez winning a set here or pushing his opponent to a tie-breaker in a couple of them.
