German tennis player Andrea Petkovic won her first round match quite comfortably against home player Oceane Dodin. Petkovic won 6-4, 6-2. Dodin was getting into the service games of Petkovic but was not able to convert while Petkovic had a 55% break point conversion rate.
The former top 10 player, had reached the semifinals of Roland Garros in 2014 and since then has reached the third round thrice.
Petkovic had only been able to play 5 matches on clay prior to this tournament and 4 of those were qualifiers. In 2021 she had a 14-8 record on clay winning the Cluj-Napoca title. She also reached the final of Hamburg on clay.
The German will have to play her best match of the season to stand a chance against Azarenka especially considering their H2H record.

Azarenka came through a much more difficult match than Petkovic. However it may have inadvertently helped Azarenka has she had to find a very high level to find a win and will head into the second round match with a lot of confidence.
