Before first Grand Slam tournament of 2019 ATP Calendar Australian Open (between 14-27 January) two last big tournaments are remaining to play which starts in Sydney and Auckland.
2019 ATP Auckland Open Draw:
While WTA’s Auckland ASB Classic Final is going to play on Sunday, ATP’s main draw matches will start without big favourites, Dominic Thiem, Thomas Berdych and probably defending champion Roberto Bautista Agut.
Austrian star Thiem who lost all matches so far at the new season has already rejected wild-card from New Zealand’s tournament on Friday.
After six months absence, Czech player Thomas Berdych reached Qatar Open final at Doha, but lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in the final. It will be interesting to see how both Berdych and Bautista Agut play in the Auckland Open, especially after the latter went on to beat Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.
The main draw of tournament includes; two-time champion John Isner, Fabio Fognini, Marco Cecchinato, Roberto Bautista Agut, Gael Monfils and three-time champion David Ferrer who announced 2019 will be his final season.
While number one seeded John Isner passes first round as bye, he will start his journey at 2019 against the winner of first round match between Marius Copil-Taylor Harry Fritz since ATP Masters Cup at November. Left hander Denis Shapovalov may be the man to beat at quarterfinals for two time champion.
Last year’s winner Bautista Agut’s way seems very auspicious. He will come through to this tournament as a big favourite, first step will be against Leonardo Mayer who tries to end his seven-match losing streak. The Spaniard may have 3rd seeded Marco Cecchinato in last eight.
Fabio Fognini will start his season in Auckland this year opposite way of 2018, he reached semifinal at Sydney a year ago. No 2 seeded will play his second round match winner of Guido Pella / Peter Gojowczyk fixtures.
Last Australian Open semifinalist Hyeon Chung (6) should win against home country’s player Jose Statham (526) which earned his wild card, fans favourite and wild-card player David Ferrer could be waiting for him in the quarterfinals.
Gael Monfils who has not played any matches since October will also try to make an impact before first grand slam tournament of 2019
There are some experienced players in the main draw also; last year’s semifinalist Robin Haase, qualifier Tennys
Sandgren and 2008 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber will take part.
