Fognini Makes a Quick Start
World No. 51 Fabio Fognini was off to a good start on Sunday as he defeated World no. 102 Alexei Popyrin in straight sets to register his 11th first round win at Roland Garros.
The 35-year-old Italian, who is making his 15th appearance in the tournament, was broken just once in the match. He converted 4 of 7 break points and saved 6 of 7 to beat the Australian 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
A 2011 quarterfinalist at the Paris major, Fognini struck 36 winners and made 33 unforced errors against his opponent’s 20 winners and 37 unforced errors.
