Holger Rune v Henri Laaksonen Head to Head

It’s been an impressive season for Holger Rune so far and the World no. 40 made it even better by topping 14th seed Denis Shapovalov in the first round of his main draw debut at Roland Garros.

The 19-year-old, who had not won a Grand Slam match in his past two major appearances, finally registered his first on Tuesday. Rune hit 10 fewer winners than Shapovalov’s 27, but also made 34 fewer unforced errors than the Canadian’s 53.

The two-hour battle saw Rune get broken just once in the match, while he converted five of nine. break points to win 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

With the win the Dane improved his season record to 13-10. He is 11-6 on clay this year. Rune recently won his first ATP title in Munich, defeating Alexander Zverev in the second round of that tournament. He also reach the semifinalist in Lyon last week, thus bringing good form to Paris.

Having recorded his first win at the Paris major, he will now be hungry for more success.

Laaksonen Shakes Off Slow Start to Advance

Henri Laaksonen reached the second round of the French Open for the third time in his fourth main draw appearance.

The Swiss, who had not won a match since his first round win in Miami, ended his six-match losing streak (across levels) with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win over Spain’s Pedro Martinez.

Ranked no. 96th in the world, Laaksonen hit 66 winners and made 58 unforced errors in the match against Martinez’s 31 winners and 36 unforced errors. Both players converted five break points each in the match, but it was the Swiss who won the key moments to knock out the World No. 43.

The 30-year-old Laaksonen faces a tough second-round contest on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if he can deliver once again.
