Jelena Ostapenko v Alize Cornet Head to Head
The tally stands at 2-2; Ostapenko got the last laugh in the 2021 Luxembourg quarterfinal as she won the match in straight sets.

Ostapenko Upsets Bronzetti
Number 13 seed Jelena Ostapenko was off to a good start in Paris as she knocked out Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti with 6-1, 6-4.
Since winning the Roland Garros in 2017 (upsetting Simona Halep in the final), the Latvian’s form has dropped considerably. She spent the last couple of years battling form woes; it wasn’t until mid-2021 that she found herself on a resurgent path with two WTA finals in Eastbourne and Luxembourg.
This year, Ostapenko has maintained that trajectory with a tally of 15-8 as of Wednesday. She won the Dubai Championships (upsetting Iga Swiatek, Petra Kvitova, Halep, and Veronika Kudermetova) – a feat sandwiched between semifinal stints in Doha and St. Petersburg.
Thereafter, the current world number 13 incurred a flurry of first-round losses in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, and Rome. These losses were rather surprising as they came at the hands of lower-ranked players Shelby Rogers, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Lauren Davis.
Inconsistency aside, Ostapenko on her best day is very tough to beat. It was in Paris that she found her element – there is no reason why she can’t do it again, especially when armed with a litany of impressive wins.

Cornet Off to a Flying Start
Carrying the hopes of a nation, Alize Cornet started her journey with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Misaki Doi.
With that win, the World No. 40 has improved her tally to 8-12 but that is not likely to be enough to beat Ostapenko. Before coming to Paris, she had lost her last three matches consecutively to Jasmine Paolini, Varvara Gracheva, and Halep.
While most of Cornet’s season is dotted with these early losses, she did take everyone by surprise in the Melbourne Slam by reaching the quarterfinal. In fact, in her 17 appearances in the major, that was the first time that the 32-year-old was one of the elite eight. Cornet made it so far by dismissing Halep, Garbine Muguruza, and Tamara Zidansek.
It’s a similar story in French Open; in her last four attempts, she succumbed before she could reach the third round.
Ostapenko v Cornet Prediction and Tip
Cornet has the experience and skill set needed to beat Ostapenko; she has done it twice already. Now that she is on home turf, she will fancy her chances all the more.
An upset bug is going around the draw and the Latvian is not immune to it. Cornet may pull this off but her chances are low. She makes for an excellent underdog bet while for those seeking a safer option, this match may see many games.
