As far as bizarre tennis inconsistencies go, one cannot put past Stephens to lead that pack. She had entered this year’s French Open on the back of a five-match losing streak which included four losses on clay.
And now, suddenly, she has won two in two despite going into both of them as a second favourite. And losing the first set in both the rounds.
First, she overcame Jules Niemeier 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 before stunning Sorana Cirstea in the second round. She was on court for an hour and 56 minutes before registering a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory in another strange turnaround.
Cirstea got the all-important break in the eighth game of the opening set, before going 2-0 up in the second game.
And that was that. Stephens ran away with the next 12 games, breaking her opponent six times in the process to seal off the three-setter.
Stephens now comes up against a surprise opponent, one ranked 97th in the world and for the first time in the tournament, the American will start off as a favourite.

Parry Continues to Impress
Parry had shot to fame late last year when she reached the finals of two WTA 125 competitions, losing one of them in Buenos Aires and winning the second at Montevideo.
She did not follow that up with too many results going her way this season though. In fact in the first eight WTA competitions Parry played this year, she failed to win a single main draw match.
It was only at Saint-Malo, another WTA 125 competition that Parry managed a match win, following it up with another victory in the first round of the WTA Paris. Moving back to Strasbourg, Parry lost in the opener yet again, leaving her a whopping second favourite for her opener against the Barbora Krejcikova.
That she defeated Krejcikova after being a set down and then crushed Maria Osorio Serrano in the second in straight sets speaks volumes of her turnaround.
Can she now test the favourite Stephens? We think so!
