Novak Djokovic v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

They played six times before with Djokovic winning all of them. The most recent one came at the ATP Finals in 2020 with Novak winning 6-3 6-2.

Djokovic Cruising Along at Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic is timing his form perfectly at Roland Garros. It’s nothing new for the Serbian who perfected the art over the years. He did not drop a single set and his win over Bedene was actually a rather lacklustre performance skill-wise.

He’s played better against both Alex Molcan and Yoshihito Nishioka but he was challenged more as well. You could say that Djokovic tanked half the match against Bedene as he seriously did not try most of the time. He took a break and then focused on holding the serve.

It worked well against Bedene as he hit 9 aces and added 30 winners with only 18 errors. Djokovic played all the matches by dozing his commitment to the match. He could flip a switch at any time he needed to and he would wrestle control of it.

It will be like that until he is properly challenged. He might be against Schwartzman, the Argentine nearly beat him in 2017 here.

Schwartzman Peaking in Paris

Diego Schwartzman is playing the best tennis of his clay season in Paris. It’s nothing unusual as he had the habit of doing so in the past. Even so, it’s not like he cruised to the 4th round. Andrey Kuznetsov took a set from him when he complicated things a bit.

Munar took two but Schwartzman was able to come back and win that match from 0-2. It was an impressive display because he never got tired and he proved once more that he is one of the fittest players on the tour. He can play long matches but he avoided one against Grigor Dimitrov.

He completely outplayed the Bulgarian which was a surprise because Dimitrov looked so good in the previous rounds. He was flying around the court and getting to every ball. Dimitrov was very frustrated the entire match and he allowed himself to commit 59 errors which is bonkers for a 3-set match.

They played some competitive matches on clay in the past and Schwartzman nearly beat Djokovic in 2017 in Paris so he will be motivated.

Djokovic v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

There are very few tennis players against whom Djokovic would not be favoured on clay. The Serbian is obviously playing superb tennis at the moment and it’s hard seeing anyone beat him. It took a superhuman effort from Carlos Alcaraz to do so in Madrid.

Schwartzman certainly plays well on clay and he knows how to play against Djokovic but everything Diego does well, Djokovic does better. It’s a sad reality and several things need to happen for the Argentine to have a chance.  I don’t feel like he has a chance but he could make it interesting.

I expect him to fight, perhaps even win a set but ultimately Novak advances.
