Clinical Alcaraz Prevails Against Korda

19-year-old from Spain Carlos Alcaraz has been the talk of the tennis world for the last couple months and rightfully so.

With Masters 1000 wins in Madrid and Miami along with the ATP 500 title in Barcelona, Alcaraz came in as one of the favorites for the title here in Paris.

A most unexpected five set battle came his way in the second round against compatriot and veteran Albert Ramos Vinalos where Alcaraz saved match point in the fourth to scrape through in an epic five set encounter displaying belief and stamina.

Playing rising American Sebastian Korda in the third round, one was expecting a close tussle again with Korda being the only person to beat Alcaraz on clay this season over in Monte Carlo.

However, it was clinical Carlos Alcaraz this time around. The Spaniard broke early in each of the first two sets and then upped the ante with two breaks in the third set to close the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 looking very much the player he has looked this season and setting himself up for a good run in week two.

Khachanov Scalps Norrie

Russian Karen Khachanov is not a natural on clay but was a quarter-finalist here at the French Open back in 2018.

The run-up to this year’s clay major was not overly inspiring for the world number 25, as besides a semi-final run at the Serbian Open, there was not much that stood out for him at the other clay court tournaments.

The first week here at Roland Garros has not been without challenges as Khachanov was pushed to four sets by little known Nuno Borges and then by Hugo Dellien in the second round.

The Russian did not start the match against Briton Cam Norrie in the third round as the favorite given the surface and the good form that Norrie has been in.

However, Khachanov was off to a strong start winning the opening set 6-2 and then resisting any Norrie resistance in the second to break late and close 7-5.

The British number one did well to come back in the third taking a tight 7-5 set, but Khachanov broke early in the fourth and withstood any continued pressure for a most impressive clay court in and a spot in the round of 16.

Alcaraz v Khachanov  Prediction and Tip

Both players looked in good touch in their previous rounds as they make the second week here in Paris. While Khachanov had to fight it out with Norrie, the Spaniard was untroubled in his match.

Alcaraz currently is looking red hot and has too many weapons on this surface for the Russian. Expect the Spaniard to make his first Roland Garros quarter-final.
