Daniil Medvedev v Marin Cilic Head to Head
They played three times and Medvedev won all three. The most recent one came last year in the Davis Cup. It was 7-6(2) 6-2 for the Russian.

Even the birds on trees know that Daniil Medvedev does not like to play on clay however he is showing a very high level on it. His best match came in the 3rd round over the very solid Kecmanovic and that’s a positive sign.
He certainly played much better than against Djere and it’s quite possibly the best match he played on the surface in the past couple of seasons. Medvedev is generally very hard to break down and Kecmanovic could not do it at all.
Medvedev smashed Kecmanovic by blasting 42 winners (18 more than his opponent). He dropped only 13 points on his first serve the entire match which is superb. It’s not like Kecmanovic wandered into the 3rd round by chance, the Serbian has played really well this year.
Medvedev is showing a level that can get him to the final if he continues to play like this. He’ll certainly have a solid chance for the quarterfinal with Cilic in his past. The Croatian never challenged him seriously before.

Surprise Run From Cilic
Marin Cilic doesn’t have many deep runs at Roland Garros and that’s mostly because he doesn’t play his best tennis on clay. That’s nothing as he never did but this year it’s been quite good.
7-4 is the score at the moment with a couple of good wins in Paris so far. He will face Daniil Medvedev in the next round and that will probably be the end of it but perhaps might make it interesting. His win over Gilles Simon wasn’t that impressive.
He did the same thing he always does, served well, hit many aces and blasted dozens of winners. But he committed a lot of mistakes and that’s not something he can do against Medvedev. To be fair, Simon was injured and Marin was looking to end points rather quickly.
He will need to be aggressive and he will need to attack but he must keep the errors at a small number. If his forehand becomes erratic he’s in big trouble. Unfortunately for him, Medvedev is a wall even on clay so that might be a problem.
Medvedev v Cilic Prediction and Tip
Daniil Medvedev is the heavy favourite here because he won all matches he played against Cilic so far. All of those matches were rather dominant as well and it shows matchup problem. Marin is a player who likes to keep rallies short and attack.
That’s all fine and dandy however he also tends to get quite frustrated at times and when he does he can throw away matches. Medvedev is a wall that gets every ball back and that will certainly annoy the Croatian. If Medvedev plays the way he did so far he will cruise. It’s as simple as that.
