World No. 23 Coco Gauff had a tough start in her fourth round match against Elise Mertens, having to comeback from a break down twice. But once she got a third break of serve to clinch the first set, the balance of the match shifted towards her.
Gauff dropped just 10 points in the second set, didn’t face a single break point and converted all three to bagel the Belgian and win the 6-4, 6-0 in an hour and 24 minutes.
The 18-year-old American, who improved to 18-10 this season, is into the quarterfinals of the clay court major for the second consecutive season.
She lost her only last eight match at a major to Barbora Krejcikova last year.
This year, Gauff has reached the last eight without dropping a set. In her first three rounds she had defeated Rebecca Marino, Alison Van Uytvanck and Kaia Kanepi.

Stephens Demolishes Teichmann
World No. 64 Sloane Stephens marched into the quarterfinals with a straight sets drubbing of Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann.
In an unexpectedly one-sided affair, Stephens was broken early by Teichmann, who went up 0-2 in the first set, but the Swiss didn’t win another game in the match as Stephens won 12 in a row to clinch the contest 6-2, 6-0 in 63 minutes.
The second set was so lopsided that Stephens won 24 of the 27 points in the set.
Stephens, who lost to Simona Halep in the 2018 final, will be featuring in a third Roland Garros quarterfinal, having also reach the last eight in 2019.
The 2017 U.S. Open winner was slow off the blocks at the Paris major this year, needing to fight back from a set down in both her first two rounds. First she knocked out Jule Niemeier 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and then she ousted Sorana Cîrstea 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. She was dominant in her third round win over Diane Parry, beating the Frenchwoman 6-2, 6-3, before raising her level further in the fourth round.
Gauff v Stephens Prediction and Tip
This is going to be a cracking contest. Stephens is the more experienced player and also a former finalist, while Gauff’s the higher-ranked player and also seeded in the competition. Expect them to go the distance with Stephens using all her experience to edge through.
