Tsitsipas’ Career-Defining Season
The 20-year-old started his previous season as the World No. 91. Over the course of the season, he jumped more than 70 places to finish the year as the World No. 15.
His rise to distinction was marked by his consistency and sheer hard work. He started the year in Doha as a qualifier and moved on to reach the quarterfinal, where he lost to Dominic Thiem. After that run, his form took a slight hit as he failed to move past the opening rounds in the next couple of tournaments.
He suffered a streak of defeats up until the Monte-Carlo Masters. After that, he got a direct entry into the main draw the ATP Barcelona. He took his chance and made the most of it by reaching the final, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. His phenomenal run here helped him break into the top 50.
He then moved on to reach the semifinal in Estoril and Washington. He played at the Rogers Cup where he lost in the final, once again to Rafael Nadal. Nonetheless, he defeated the likes of Novak Djokovic, Kevin Anderson, Alexander Zverev, and Dominic Thiem to reach the final in Toronto.
Later that year, he won his first and only title of the season in Stockholm. He also won the ATP Next Gen Finals which certainly boosted his confidence for the coming season.
