Swiatek Streak Extends to 33 Matches
2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek is just a win away from a second Grand Slam final. The 21-year-old Polish player defeated America’s Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros on Wednesday to extend her unbeaten run to 33 matches.
The match started with both players trading an early break, but Swiatek restored her one break advantage in the seventh game and then broke again in the ninth to take the first set. She dominated the second set as well, going up a break in the fourth game and then sealing the match in the eighth by converting her fourth break point.
The World No. 1 hit 30 winners and made 28 unforced errors compared to World No. 11’s 16 winners and 27 unforced errors.
The 21-year-old, who had last lost a match in the second round in Dubai, has since then won five consecutive titles in Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome.
This will be her second straight Grand Slam semifinal. She lost to Danielle Collins at the Australian Open in January.
Swiatek began her 2022 French Open campaign with easy wins over Lesia Tsurenko, Alison Riske and Danka Kovinić. She was tested in the fourth round by China’s Qinwen Zheng, but still managed to keep her winning streak intact.

Kasatkina in First Grand Slam Semifinal
World No. 20 Daria Kasatkina moved into the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career after knocking out fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old is yet to drop a set in this tournament. Having not lost more than five games in her first four rounds, it was for the first time when Kasatkina lot 10 games in a match in this tournament, with Kudermetova testing her with her aggressive game but eventually paying for making 50 unforced errors in the match.
Kudermetova had 22 more winners than Kasatkina’s 16 but it was the latter’s 25 unforced errors that stood her in good stead during her 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory in two hours and eight minutes.
This is the fourth time that Kasatkina has reached the last four stage of the tournament this year, following semifinal finishes in Melbourne, Sydney and Rome.
At the French Open, she began her campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 win over lucky loser Rebecca Šramková and then knocked out qualifier Fernanda Contreras Gomez 6-0, 6-3 in Round 2.
She continued her dominance in the third round, dispatching Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-2, before easing past Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-2.
Kasatkina was broken just twice in the first four rounds, but she lost serve four times against Kudermetova, saving just three of the seven break points that she faced. In contrast, she had 17 breaking opportunities in the match and she could only capitalise on five of those chances.
Can she cause a huge upset on Thursday?
Swiatek v Kasatkina Prediction and Tip
