Lauren Davis v Caroline Garcia Head to Head
Their only previous meeting at the highest level came in 2015 at the Hong Kong Open and Garcia had cruised through to a 6-1, 6-3 win over her opponent. It’s been a while though with both players having gone through a few ups and downs in their careers since then.

After showing initial spark this season in hard court competitions, Davis’ form looked to have tapered off drastically on clay. In the end, fitness issues resulted in Davis withdrawing from the French Open and she enters this tournament after having taken a break for nearly a month.
A look at Davis’ overall record suggests she is a much better player on hard court surfaces than the rest. On grass, however, things have been far worse for Davis, who had made it to the third round at Wimbledon in 2019 as her best showing.
She had defeated Angelique Kerber there but since then the lack of tennis on grass has meant her semifinal appearance in this competition last season was more of a surprise than a case of coming back to form for the American.
Can Davis start off with a strong showing against a player who is coming off a Grand Slam title win – albeit on clay and in doubles.

Garcia Hoping to Reproduce Doubles Form
She was once ranked fourth in the world but Garcia’s singles form has fallen away and she is currently down to 79th in the world.
Garcia is coming off a second round defeat in the singles competition at the French Open but claimed her second Grand Slam win on the doubles circuit. Partnering with fellow Frenchwoman Kristina Maldenovic, Garcia overcame Jessica Pegula and Cori Gauff in the final.
How much of that is relevant to this match isn’t quite known especially because Garcia looks to have turned her attention to doubles because of her struggles on the singles circuit.
She is up against a player who is returning to the circuit after a short layoff and that might work in her favour though.

While Davis would otherwise have been a favourite here, Garcia holds the edge as a result of her confidence and her opponent’s layoff. Expect Garcia to sneak through here.
