It took Sonego a while to get going in his opening round match against the otherwise struggling Benoit Paire but once he got himself a foothold, the Italian was able to get through without too much trouble.
Sonego was on court for an hour and 18 minutes to get the better of Paire, winning 7-5, 6-2 to reach the second round.
Down an early break, Sonego broke back immediately in the very next game but then fell 3-5 down soon after that. Paire failed to serve out the set though as Sonego levelled things out off the only break-point he got in the 10th game and then broke again to love to clinch the set.
It was smooth sailing for Sonego in the second set where he earned himself two breaks of serves – in the fourth and eighth games – to seal a place against Struff.
His performance should give Sonego enough confidence coming up against a player who only won his second match of the season.

Struff Overcomes Two Match-Points
Struff wasn’t quite the favourite going into his opening round match against Marcos Giron and while he struggled through some parts of the encounter, the German came through in what turned out to be the match of the day.
It was one that lasted two hours and 10 minutes with Struff saving a couple of match-points in the final set before winning 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (8).
Blasting 23 aces in the encounter, Struff first overcame a 2-4 deficit in the final set to push it into a tie-breaker and was then 5-6 and 7-8 down in that phase of the encounter.
Struff, who had won just one match the whole of this season coming into one, also missed a match-point of his own at 7-6 in that tie-breaker but came through by winning three points in a row.

Sonego v Struff Prediction and Tip
Sonego continues to be the favourite at this one but will be wary of Struff’s serving form. Still expecting a straight-set win for Sonego.
