Auger-Aliassime Battles Past Griekspoor
Second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime headed into the quarterfinals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, after claiming a victory over Tallon Griekspoor in the second round on Thursday.
Making his tournament debut this year, the 21-year-old Canadian had a tough start, with the Dutch taking him to tiebreaks in both the sets. But Auger-Aliassime dominated both the tiebreaks to win 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5) in an hour and 48 minutes. Neither player could get a break of serve in the match. While the Canadian missed both of the two breaking opportunities, the Dutchman didn’t hold a single break point in the contest.
The World No. 9 is yet to win a title on grass, but was in wonderful touch on the surface last year, reaching the final in Stuttgart, a semifinal in Halle and a quarterfinal at Wimbledon in his three tournaments. Thursday’s win improved his overall grass court record to 19-6.
He has been in great form this season, winning his maiden career title in Rotterdam and reaching a 10th ATP final in Marseille. While he didn’t have an exceptional clay season, he would still be happy with four quarterfinal finishes. Now onto grass, he has made a solid start, eking out a tough win against a good player. He will be looking to go deeper with a win on Friday.
