Medvedev Knocks Out Defending Champion

Daniil Medvedev dispatched defending champion Adrian Mannarino in a close to two-hour contest on Saturday to advance to a second final of the season.

The Russian, who was the runner-up at the Australian Open this year, is set to become the World No. 1 player on Monday. And he will be hoping to celebrate his return to the top with title success on Sunday.

Although he has reached the final without dropping a set, it’s not been an easy sailing for the Russian, with all three of his matches lasting close to two hours. He started with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Gilles Simon and then Battled past Ilya Ivashka 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 in the quarterfinal.

On Saturday, against Mannarino, the 26-year-old went up a break twice in the first set, but the Frenchman pulled the break back on both the occasions. However, the Russian got the decisive third break in the 11th game and then sealed the set in the next.

Medvedev was the first to break in the second set as well, but he couldn’t serve out the match at 5-4, as Mannarino broke back to drawl level. The Russian restored the advantage immediately in the next game and then closed out the match in the next game for a 7-5, 7-5 victory.

A 13-time champion from 23 previous finals, Medvedev will be aiming to win his second title on grass on Sunday, adding to the title he won in Mallorca last year.

Van Rijthoven Upsets Second Seed

Local hope Tim Van Rijthoven continued his surprise run at the Rosmalen Open, as the World no. 205 advanced to a maiden ATP final with an upset win over second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinal on Saturday.

Van Rijthoven, playing his maiden grass court tournament on the tour, had not won a tour level match before the start of the tournament. But the 25-year-old wildcard made extraordinary progress over the week.

Starting with a straight sets win over Australia’s Matthew Ebden, the Dutchman then stunned the third seed Taylor Fritz 6-7 (9-11), 7-5, 6-4 in the second round to score his first ever top 20 win.

Van Rijthoven continued his winning momentum in the quarterfinal, dispatching Hugo Gaston in straight sets, before scoring his first top 10 win over No. 9 Auger-Aliassime.

The Dutch player got the sole break of the first set, but the Canadian made a resounding comeback in the second, breaking his opponent twice and forcing the decider.

It was a neck-and-neck third set, with neither player getting broken. However, the Dutchman got the decisive mini break in the tiebreak to edge the contest 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Can Van Rijthoven cap off the dream week with a maiden ATP title?
