Denis Shapovalov v Tommy Paul Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, last year on indoor hard courts in Stockholm, Paul winning in three sets on the way to his maiden ATP title.

Wimbledon Semi-Finalist Shapovalov

Last year Canadian Shapovalov reached the last four of this tournament before losing to Cameron Norrie.

Inspired by that he went on to reach his maiden Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon, before losing to the eventual champion Novak Djokovic in three closely fought sets.

That remains his best showing in a Grand Slam, although he did reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January.

Since then he has reached the semi-finals in Dubai, whilst the highlight of his clay court season was reaching the quarter-finals in Rome, , although he suffered a first round defeat at Roland Garros at the hands of the Norwegian teenager Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune.

He lost his first match of the year on grass last week, beaten in Stuttgart by the German Oscar Otte.

Paul’s Progress Has Stalled Recently

Paul who was the junior French Open champion, achieved a  career breakthrough by winning in Stockholm last November, and when he reached the semi-finals in Delray Beach earlier this year, it looked like he was poised for a sustained push up the rankings.

A quarter-final defeat to Rafael Nadal in Acapulco seemed to confirm that promise, as did third round appearances in Indian Wells and Miami.

But he had a disappointing season on his favourite surface of clay, and the best he managed were second round appearances in Houston and Rome.

He has lost his last three matches, including a first round defeat at the French Open to Cristian Garin and his first match of the year on grass, beaten by compatriot Brandon Nakashima in Rosmalen last week.

Shapovalov v Paul Prediction and Tip

If Shapovalov can rediscover the form on grass that saw him reach the semi-finals of this event and then Wimbledon last year, then he should win comfortably against an opponent not known for his prowess on the surface.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
