It’s Been an Ordinary Season By Muguruza’s Standards
Garbine Muguruza had a brilliant 42-17 season last year, winning three titles from five finals, which included the season ending WTA Finals triumph.
Come 2022 and the Spaniard has struggled big time throughout the year. She brings a woeful 7-9 season record to Berlin and will be desperate to regain the form that made her such a dangerous player last year.
The World No. 10 has won consecutive matches just once this year, and that was in Doha where she reached the quarterfinals. She was also in the last eight in Sydney, but hasn’t really been in form in the other tournaments. most recently, she bowed out of the first round of the French Open.
Can grass change her fortunes? It definitely can, as Muguruza is the 2017 Wimbledon champion and was also a finalist in 2015. The two-time major champion has a decent 30-17 tour-level record on the surface and she was also a quarterfinalist in Berlin last year. So expect her to regain her touch on grass.

Petkovic Struggling This Season
Facing her will be the vastly experienced Andrea Petkovic, who has a 4-6 record in the main draws this year. She was a quarterfinalist in the first tournament in Melbourne but hasn’t won consecutive matches since then.
The 34-year-old World no. 57 has not had as much success on grass as she has had on hard courts in particular, but the German did reach a grass court final in Rosmalen in 2010.
Overall, Petkovic is 23-23 on grass in the main draws at the tour level.
She will be playing in Berlin for the second time following her first round exit on debut last year.
A winner of 7 titles from 13 finals, Petkovic had won her last title in Cluj Napoca last year.
