2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep began her 2022 grass court campaign with a straight sets win over Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko at the Birmingham Classic.
Halep dropped just one game in a dominating first set display, but faced some resistance from the Ukrainian in the second. The Romanian came back from a break down twice in the second set, before edging ahead with a third break in the ninth game. She served out the match in the next game for a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
The one hour and 18 minutes contest saw Halep convert 5 of 7 break points and save 6 of 8. She won 74% points on her first serve.
The win improved the World No. 20’s season record to 21-7. She had won her 23rd career title at the Melbourne Summer Set earlier this year.
On grass, Halep’s got a solid 37-15 record. This was her first victory on the surface since beating Serena Williams in the final of the Wimbledon in 2019. The 2020 tournaments were suspended due to COVID, while she withdrew from the 2021 grass season due to an injury.

Dart Demolishes Osorio
Facing Halep in the second round will be Britain’s Harriet Dart, who demolished Camila Osorio in just 69 minutes in the first round on Monday to register her first main draw victory in Birmingham after losing both her previous opening round matches.
The 106th-ranked Dart, who had briefly moved to a career-best ranking of 99 earlier this year, dropped serve just once in the match, while she converted 6 of 9 break points to beat the Colombian 6-2, 6-0.
Last week’s Nottingham quarterfinalist, Dart improved to 3-1 on grass this season. She will be looking to improve that record on Wednesday but faces a tough opponent.
