World no. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime dug deep to see off America’s Marcos Giron and move into the second round in the Hale Open.
The fourth seed, who was shocked by Tim van Rijthoven in the semifinals of the Rosmalen Open last week, overcame the setback with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Giron on Tuesday.
After the dominating the first set, auger Aliassime saw a dip in his level in the second set, allowing Giron to fightback in the contest. But the Canadian once again lifted his game in the decider to seal the two hours and 14 minutes contest 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Auger-Aliassime struck 11 aces in the match and saved 5 of 8 break points. He also had nine opportunities to break his opponent and he capitalised on five of those chances.
The win improved the last year’s Wimbledon quarterfinalist to 21-7 on grass and to 29-14 in 2022. This has been a successful year for the Canadian so far, which saw him win his first career title in Rotterdam and also reach the final in Marseille. He will be aiming to go deep in Halle as well.

McDonald Knocks Out Qualifier Huesler
After faltering in the first round in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Mackenzie McDonald made a winning start at the Halle Open, defeating Marc-Andrea Huesler in straight sets on Monday.
Ranked No. 53 in the world, McDonald had fallen 0-3 behind in the first set tiebreak, but he came back well, winning the next six points. Huesler saved one of the three set points but McDonald eventually took a one-set lead.
McDonald broke in the fifth game of the second set and then marched to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory.
The World No. 53 is 13-14 this season. A win Wednesday will put him in a second quarterfinal of the season.
