Matteo Berrettini v Denis Kudla Head to Head

This is a long-standing rivalry which will add another chapter to it, what with this being their seventh overall meeting and fifth in the main draw at the highest level.

Both have won two apiece in main draws and three each overall.

Berrettini, however, has won their last two encounters, including one on the grass courts of Stuttgart in 2019.

Berrettini Brushes Aside Evans

He is a top-10 player, sure, but not sure if a lot of fans had expected Berrettini to make the kind of comeback he has made since returning from his three-month long layoff.

Berrettini, who won the Stuttgart Open title last week with a final win over Andy Murray, kick-started his campaign here with a strong performance yet again.

The 2021 Wimbledon finalist overcame his second British opponent in as many matches, defeating Dan Evans 6-3, 6-3 to march into the second round.

In a match lasting an hour and 36 minutes, Berrettini faced seven break-points and saved each one of them. On the other hand, he broke his opponent three times, including twice in the second set to seal the encounter.

Given the kind of form he has shown, it would take a lot for his lucky loser opponent to get past him.

Kudla Edges Past Sonego

Kudla might have been packing his bags after losing in the qualifiers to Quentin Halys but here he is, now, taking on Berrettini in the second round. And that’s thanks to his qualification to the main draw courtesy of Andy Murray’s withdrawal and then a hard-fought win over Lorenzo Sonego in his opener.

The American was on court for two hours and 18 minutes, overcoming Sonego 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 after enduring 11 aces in the encounter.

There were ample breaks of serves in the match, with Kudla himself losing his service on four different occasions but managed to get that one extra break in the final set to win it.

Kudla will now need to up the ante even further against a player in the kind of form and showing the pedigree that Berrettini has. He would do well to look back at some of his old wins over the Italian but even he would know those were results from way back in the past.

Berrettini v Kudla Prediction and Tip

Berrettini should not face too many worries in getting past Kudla except for the fact the American is a decent grass-courter and might manage to push him a bit in one of the sets.

Tip: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 4/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
