Third seed and World no. 26 Camila Giorgi edged out Tereza Martincova in the first round in Birmingham on Wednesday.
The Italian saved four of 10 break points and converted seven of eight to win the match 7-6 (9-7), 6-4. The one hour and 46 minutes contest which began on Tuesday, finished on Wednesday morning after the match was suspended on Tuesday.
Giorgi double faulted 11 times in the match, an area that she would look to work on agains Davis.
The 30-year-old right-hander, who was a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2018, tends to do well on grass. She was knocked out of the second round in Nottingham last week but will be hoping to reach her first quarterfinal of the season on Thursday.

Davis Sends Juvan Packing
World no. 108 Lauren Davis battled past Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan in straight sets on Tuesday.
The American won both the sets in tiebreak after both players broke each other once in each set.
Davis won 77% points on the first serve and won 84 of 162 points to win the match 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5).
The 28-year-old improved to 7-8 in the main draws this year. The win on Tuesday was her first on grass this season following her first round exit from the Nottingham Open last week.
Davis has a decent 19-21 tour level record on grass courts. Previously she had won just two matches in Birmingham in 2014, reaching the round of 16. She had bowed out of the first round in the other five Birmingham appearances.

Davis has had the upper hand in this rivalry. But Giorgi’s recent record has been better. Expect the Italian to edge through.
