Zhang won her first round match in Birmingham against Croatian player Jana Fett who had come through the qualifiers. She won 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, showing great character after going one set down.
The Chinese veteran has a good record in Birmingham, reaching the semifinals in 2014 where she lost to eventual champion Ana Ivanovic.
Currently ranked 54, Zhang started her Grass season in Nottingham where she reached the quarterfinal. She also lifted the doubles title alongside singles champion Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Zhang’s record on grass in the past 3 years is quite strong, within which reached the quarterfinal of Wimbledon in 2019 while she finished runners up in Nottingham last year.
She has been dominating the doubles in the tour and is currently ranked 3. However her singles game is still quite strong and she aspires to get back into the top 30.

Ruse Wins First Round Thriller
Elena Gabriela Ruse came through the first round with a thrilling win over Qiang Wang. It was a topsy turvy encounter that was decided in two tie breaks, Ruse winning 7-6 (6), 7-6(12).
This is the first time Ruse will take part in the WTA Birmingham classic. The 24 year old has only played 22 matches on grass all career.
The win over Wang was her first grass match and victory of the season. She has had a mixed year with a 13-11 record, but is a player of immense caliber and should never be written off.
