Wozniacki’s Imperfect Start
The Dane started the 2019 season Auckland, where she was a runner-up last year. This time around, however, she made it as far as the second round before succumbing to the Canadian qualifier Bianca Andreescu in straight sets.
After Wozniacki’s shocking loss to the 18-year-old player, Uytvanck will certainly fancy her chances heading into this fixture. At the same time, she cannot afford to give Wozniacki any room to play.
The third seed won the Aus Open last year after defeating Simona Halep in the final. That win marked the maiden Grand Slam of her career, following a couple of runner-up feats at the US Open. After a brilliant stint in the Australian Open series, she moved on to recreate similar feats at the WTA Doha and Italian Open, where she reached the penultimate rounds.
She also won the WTA Eastbourne after defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final. However, she didn’t have great of a run in the US Open Series. Wozniacki also won the Premier Mandatory event in Beijing and concluded her season with the WTA Finals.
Uytvanck’s Busy Start to the Year
The World No. 51 has kept herself busy since the start of the season. The 24-year-old started the year in Auckland, where she lost her opening match to the Dutch qualifier Bibiane Schoofs. She then travelled to Hobart, where she started the competition as the eighth seed.
She didn’t have much luck there either and lost in the second round to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Considering her run in the previous season, Uytvanck reached the semifinal at the WTA Linz where she lost to Camila Giorgi in straight sets. The Belgian also reached the fourth round at the Wimbledon and was the winner at the WTA Budapest.
Wozniacki v Uytvanck Head to Head
Wozniacki and Uytvanck have crossed paths only once on the WTA Tour. They met in the second round of WTA Rome, where the Dane won 6-1, 6-4.
Comparing the form of the two players, Wozniacki is definitely going to start this match as the favourite to win. However, she has to be on the lookout to avoid another shocking exit like the one she incurred in Auckland.
