Belinda Bencic v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

In their one and only meeting on the tour, Sakkari emerged as the winner. The match took place in the 2020 St. Petersburg Open where the Greek won in three sets.

A Historic Semifinal for Sakkari

Friday was a day of firsts for the Greek No. 1 and world number six Maria Sakkari.

For one, she defeated Daria Kasatkina for the first time in five attempts to finally get a win over the Russian. Sakkari was absolutely ruthless in her performance as she took the quarterfinal 6-0, 6-3. With that, she maintains her flawless streak in Berlin having not dropped a set in her opening matches against Leolia Jeanjean and Daria Saville.

Secondly, this is Maria’s first grasscourt semifinal. Last week, she came quite close to it in Nottingham where she fell to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the quarterfinal. This time around, she has gone the distance and already put herself in contention for the Wimbledon.

Sakkari has had an impressive season so far with two big finals at the Indian Wells and St. Petersburg, and a couple of late-stage appearances in Doha and Rome. Her tally now is 25-11.

Having kept the same rhythm on the green surface, she will eye the trophy match on Sunday.

Bencic Knocks Out Kudermetova

Last year’s German Open finalist Belinda Bencic has done well to continue her path to the title once again.

Although all of her preceding matches have been three-setters, the Swiss fought brilliantly to keep her calm and maintain her rhythm. The wins came against the likes of Jule Niemeier, Anna Kalinskaya, and Veronika Kudermetova.

That victory over Kudermetova will be a boost for the World No. 17; the Russian had arrived in Berlin on the back of deep runs in the French Open and last week’s Libema Open.

For Bencic to subdue her 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, is certainly a remarkable feat and also an act of revenge seeing that she lost to her last week in Den Bosch in the quarters.

This will be Belinda’s third semifinal of the season with the other runs coming in Miami (loss to Naomi Osaka) and Charleston (title run, defeated Ons Jabeur in the final).

Moreover, Bencic is strong on grass. Over the course of her career, she has four grass finals to her name. Her tally is also quite similar to Sakkari’s with 25-10.

Bencic v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

This has all the makings of being a close affair. Both players are well-versed in playing at an elite level and are no stranger to being in the top 10. Bencic has a slight edge on account of her superior grass form but Sakkari is a strong contender and can quickly negate that advantage.

Expect a cracking match.
