German Wildcard Maria
Maria’s third round appearance at Wimbledon back in 2015 remains the best she has managed at a Grand Slam tournament, in a professional career dating back more than twenty years.
Now 34, the German was once ranked as high as 45 in the world, but having dropped outside the top 100, has had to rely on a wildcard into the main draw of this tournament this time.
However, she has been a winner on the senior tour this year, beating the Brazilian Laura Pigossi to win the Colombian Open in April. Significantly perhaps, her other tournament win at this level was on grass, in Mallorca four years ago.
This will be her fourth grass court tournament of the season. She reached the quarter-finals of junior events in Surbiton and Gaiba in Italy, sandwiched with a first round defeat to Katie Boulter of Great Britain in Nottingham.

Potapova has had no practice on grass prior to this match against Maria and that makes her potentially vulnerable to an upset, However, if she can rediscover the form on grass that made her a junior Wimbledon champion, she should win.
