Petra Martic has yet to win a match on grass this year but she only played one event. It came last week in Birmingham where she played a very strong grass player in Aleksandra Krunic.
The Croatian used to be a solid grass player earlier in her career but the recent results have been quite poor. It’s not so much that she can’t play well on the surface it’s just that other players are better. She doesn’t have very flat groundstrokes and that hurts her on the surface.
The serve is very useful but it’s too much up and down generally. Add the overall trend to play inconsistent tennis and it’s a dangerous mix that gets her beaten on the surface by solid and consistent players. It’s been a solid year for Petra 17-12 but she’s on a 3-match losing streak.
The last time she won consecutive matches came in Rome and since then it’s been 3 defeats in a row. It’s a troublesome trend for her and one she would like to snap ahead of Wimbledon.

Burrage Catching Fire in Ilkley
Jodie Burrage will play in the Ilkey final after playing some superb tennis all week long. The British player is a solid grass player mainly due to her familiarity the surface. Like many native players from Great Britain, she practically grew up on the surface.
That run in Ilkley should be a good warm up for her ahead of two very crucial events. Eastbourne and Wimbledon could to wonders for her career which is still fairly young (age 23). The run to the final did not feature any top 100 players but she also did not drop a single set.
It’s quite clear her level is improving and especially on grass we might see her do some good things. The ranking is outside of the top 200 and it’s a shame that the points were stripped. She could have used them. Either a 24-16 year is pretty strong.
Martic v Burrage Prediction and Tip
So Petra Martic is still winless but this is a fairly solid chance for her to get that win. Burrage will be coming to Eastbourne quite tired after her run in Ilkley with very minimal rest. There will be some travelling involved as well which might prove a factor.
Martic generally is good enough to beat players far outside of the top 100 and Burrage is just that. Yes, it’s on grass but it’s not like Martic never won a match on grass. Burrage would be the value bet if she did not play a lengthy event days ahead of this matchup but in this spot, take Martic.
