Beatriz Haddad Maia v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between the two, with Kanepi winning that encounter in straight sets. It came at the French Open played a few weeks ago, with Kanepi clinching it 6-4, 6-4.

Haddad Maia on a Roll

It’s a golden phase in Haddad Maia’s career and she will want to capitalise it, want to grab it with both her hands. In the five previous tournaments she has played this season, Haddad Maia has won three titles and has been a finalist at one other.

The Brazilian player added a third title to her kitty when her opponent in the final Shuai Zhang retired from their encounter in the first set. Earlier in the tournament, Haddad Maia had defeated Petra Kvitova, Camila Giorgi and Simona Halep as well to reach the title-deciding round.

In Nottingham in the week preceding this, she had overturned underdog odds in three successive matches – against Maria Sakkari, Tereza Martincova and Alison Riske – to lift that title as well, making it 10 wins on grass in a row for the now-world-number 29.

Here against the experience of Kanepi, a player who isn’t much of a grass courter, Haddad Maia will be confident of making it 11 wins in a row.

Kanepi Hasn’t Done Too Much on Grass

In her career spanning over two decades, Kanepi has played in a mere 53 matches on grass and this includes encounters at every competitive level including qualifiers and ITF competitions. That’s a little over two every season – not what you call an experienced grass-court player.

What’s even more interesting is the way things have gone for Kanepi in the two matches she has played on grass this year.

In the first, in the opener in Berlin against Karolina Pliskova, she scraped through the first set in a tie-breaker and then fell to two bagels at the hands of the former world number one.

The next one, here in the first round in Eastbourne, Kanepi lost the first set in a tie-breaker to Nuria Parrizas-Diaz before winning the next two, 6-4, 6-4 to seal her place in the second.

Against the in-form Haddad Maia, however, Kanepi will need to bring out her experience to try and disrupt her opponent’s rhythm. Only issue with that is, Kanepi doesn’t have much of that on grass.

Haddad Maia v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

Haddad Maia is 2/5 to win this and while Kanepi isn’t one to roll over easily, we cannot see her win this one, unless her opponent has had too much tennis under her belt and that’s causing exhaustion issues.
