Svitolina – A Force to be Reckoned With
Svitolina, who is currently the World No. 6, is set to start the competition as a serious contender for the title. Last year in Melbourne, she made it as far as the quarterfinal before losing to Elise Mertens. That was also her best run at the Aus Open.
However, what has particularly impressed the fans is her performance on the tour. She won four titles over the course of her season, the biggest ones being the Italian Open and the year-end WTA Finals in Singapore. In the latter, she defeated some of the most prominent players on the tour – Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova, and Caroline Wozniacki.
She started her 2019 season in Brisbane, where she lost her opening match to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Nonetheless, all great players succumb to shocking losses at times and Svitolina’s defeat should not be taken as a sign of her loss in form.
Golubic’s Qualification to the Main Draw
This is the first time that the Swiss has qualified for the main draw this season. She played in the Brisbane International but lost in the final round of the qualifiers. At the Melbourne Park, however, she managed to go the distance without dropping a single set.
The Swiss spent most of her previous season alternating between the ITF and the WTA circuits, without much luck on the either. In most of the competitions, she failed to move past the early rounds. Her best run on the WTA Tour came at the WTA Gstaad, where she reached the second round before succumbing to Eugenie Bouchard.
Svitolina v Golubic – Who Will Win?
Despite her early loss in the WTA Brisbane this season – a competition she went in as the defending champion, she is a player that is not meant to be taken lightly. The 24-year-old has turned many heads on the tour but that is not to say that she hasn’t had bad days.
For instance, at the Wimbledon last year, she incurred a shocking defeat against Tatjana Maria in the first round. While that is a possibility here as well, it is hard to imagine Golubic pulling that kind of an upset. Expect the Ukranian to win this one in straight sets.
