Eighth seed Jelena Ostapenko won her only title on grass in Eastbourne last year. The Latvian had defeated Anett Kontaveit in the final to win the WTA 500 title.
Ranked No. 14 in the World, Ostapenko won her fifth title in Dubai this year. She brings a 16-10 season record to Eastbourne.
A semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2018, Ostapenko has a 31-16 record on grass. But the 25-year-old is 1-1 on the surface this year. She beat Rebecca Marino in the opener in Birmingham but fell to Dayana Yastremska in the second round. Both of those matches had needed a third set to decide the winner.
Looking to defend her title in Eastbourne, Ostapenko will look to make a solid start on Tuesday.

Tomljanovic Beats Krunic in Three
World No. 45 Ajla Tomljanovic won a roller-coaster against Aleksandra Krunić on Monday to advance to the second round of the tournament.
Tomljanovic, who was a quarterfinalist in Nottingham earlier this month, improved to 3-1 on grass this season. The Australian is a decent player on the surface and had made it to her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon last year.
The 29-year-old was extremely dominant in the first set, as she bageled Krunic. The Serbian, however, turned the tables in the second set, racing to a 0-4 lead. Tomljanovic pulled a break back but couldn’t get another break as Krunic forced the decider.
In the third, both traded two breaks each before Tomljanovic got the decisive third break to win the contest 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
