Beatriz Haddad Maia’s red-hot streak continued in Eastbourne as she registered her 11th consecutive win on Tuesday, defeating Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in the second round of the tournament.
The Brazilian, who had a first round bye, won back-to-back singles titles in Nottingham and Birmingham. What’s more she had also won the doubles title in Nottingham, thus she hasn’t lost a match on grass this season.
The 26-year-old World no. 29 needed two hours and 24 minutes to beat the Estonian, ranked 10 places below her. Haddad Maia got the solitary break of the first set in the very first game of the match. The roles reversed in the second set though, with Kanepi taking charge with an early break and then protecting the lead through the end of the set to force the decider.
In the third, both held serve for the first five games, before Haddad Maia got the vital break in the sixth game and then she held on to the lead for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
With Tuesday’s win, the Brazilian improved her season record to 20-10 on the tour and 35-12 overall. She will be looking to extend her streak to 12 matches on Wednesday.

Burrage Shocks Badosa
Britain’s Jodie Burrage reached the third round of the tournament with a stunning straight sets upset of top seed Paula Badosa on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old didn’t face a single break point in the first set, while she converted one of four to take a one-set-to-love lead. She continued to dominate in the second set, getting off to a 4-0 start. The World No. 4 made a comeback attempt, winning three games in a row, but the World no. 169 took the next two games to complete a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Burrage had scored a comeback win over Petra Martic in the first round, beating the Croatian 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The Briton, too, has been in great form on grass. She was a finalist at the ITF event in Ilkley last week, falling to Dalma Galfi to finish runner-up.
It will be interesting to see if Burrage can extend her dream run on Wednesday and put an end to Haddad Maia’s run towards a third consecutive title.

Despite Burrage’s stunning victory on Tuesday, Haddad Maia will be the favourite in this contest. Expect the Brazilian to extend the streak and advance to another quarterfinal.
