Tomova in a Rare Quarterfinal

Viktoriya Tomova finds herself in just her second WTA quarterfinal here in Eastbourne. Playing as a lucky loser, she defeated Kirsten Flipkens 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to avenge her qualifying loss over the weekend and reach the elite eight.

The Bulgarian, age 27, defeated Shelby Rogers in her opening, second-round bout in three sets after replacing Ons Jabeur in the bracket.

Interestingly enough, her last big run like this came in the Serbia Open last May – also as a lucky loser. After losing to Ana Konjuh in the prelims, she moved on to beat Lola Radivojevic, Leylah Fernandez, and Reka Jani before losing to Paula Badosa.

Tomova has a career-best ranking of World No. 103. Her current ranking is some 25 places below and rightly so; she is quite unheard of on the WTA Tour.

This is also her best run of the season with her previous WTA highlight being the first-round appearance in the French Open and Australian Open, in addition to a round-two stint in Monterrey. Viktoriya also spent some time on the ITF circuit where she was the runner-up in ITF Oeiras.

Giorgi Stuns Muguruza

Taking advantage of her grass momentum, Camila Giorgi dispatched the number five seed and heavy favourite Garbine Muguruza 7-5, 6-3. The win follows a similar straight-set dismissal of Rebecca Marino in the preceding round.

The 12th-seeded Italian has had ample time to get acclimatised to the grass swing; she was a quarterfinalist in Birmingham last week (wins over Tereza Martincova and Lauren Davis) and also had a round-two appearance in Nottingham in the preceding week.

That said, her season so far has been largely wobbly and it is only on grass that she has been able to find some form. Her previous best results came in the majors in Melbourne and Paris where she reached mid-rounds. Between the two tournaments, Giorgi lost her opening-round bouts in six events.

Giorgi v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Giorgi is the clear favourite here on account of her superior ranking (World No. 26), her grass form, and a comparatively better pedigree spread across nine singles finals and a WTA 1000 title from the Canadian Open last season. She has faced her fair share of top 20 players on the tour and will fancy her chances against Tomova.

However, the Bulgarian has proven to be a commanding opponent Giorgi isn’t entirely immune from surprising losses. Expect a good game of tennis where Tomova makes for a good underdog bet.
