Muguruza Struggles Continue on Grass

Forgettable. And underwhelming.

These are two of the words that come to mind when one looks back at Muguruza’s season so far.

Because for a multiple Grand Slam winner who had begun to show a lot of sparkle again last year, the Spaniard’s on-court form has been anything but spectacular this year.

Muguruza has just eight wins under her belt in nearly six months and having played 11 tournaments. And her latest foray on grass which came in Eastbourne earlier this week ended with Muguruza crashing out in the second round, losing to Camila Giorgi in straight sets.

She was also sent packing in the opening round at Berlin by Andrea Petkovic and since getting to the quarterfinals in Doha, has won just three main draw encounters.

With that kind of form under her belt, Muguruza will need to put up a way more solid showing to even emulate her third round appearance at Wimbledon from last year.

Minnen in Her Own Form Strife

Minnen has featured in 11 WTA tournaments this season including the WTA125 series competitions. Her total main draw wins for the season reads a measely two.

This is the same player who had won an ITF competition early in the year and followed it up with a runnerup trophy in the very next but Minnen has been unable to convert that form into something substantial at the highest level.

In fact if one were to take some consolation out of her performances it’s this – the second of her two main draw wins came in the last tournament she featured in. It was at Bad Homburg, on grass and Minnen came away with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Misaki Doi.

Two first round defeats on grass had preceded that victory and it was followed by another second round defeat in Bad Homburg itself.

And while Muguruza has had her own problems on grass, it’s tough to see Minnen posses the game to topple her opponent here.

Muguruza v Minnen Prediction and Tip
