Bautista Agut Beats Top Seed and World Number One

It has been a frustrating past few months for Batuista-Agut, as he has watched his world ranking slip as he has consistently struggled to reach the further reaches of tournaments.

However, he may be feeling happier with life after the events of Mallorca this week.

His week began with a straight sets win over the Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel, but he got a slice of luck when his proposed second round opponent Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the tournament.

That meant he faced the world number one Daniil Medvedev, playing in his last event before his enforced rest whilst Wimbledon is staged.

What looked to be a tough test on paper, started well for the Spaniard though, and he broke the Russian in his opening service game. Medvedev missed two opportunities to break back, but Batuista-Agut also had a chance to extend his lead. In the end he held on to clinch the first set,

Medvedev dropped his serve again early in the second set and the fight seemed to go out of him after that, He was broken again and the Spaniard served out next game.

Bellier’s Improbable Run Continues

This has already been a week to remember for the 25-year old Bellier, who came through the qualifying competition to reach the quarter-finals, in the process defeating both Federico Delbonis, and then the fourth seed Pablo Carreno-Busta.

And he showed he is not quite ready to stop yet with a determined performance against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, the world number 53, to reach his first ever ATP semi-final.

The first set was largely dominated by serve until the eleventh game when Bellier offered up two break points, the second of which Griekspoor took, and then consolidated next game.

Bellier then saved four break points in the opening game of the second set, and would eventually hold three set points, none of which he could convert. And, when he went a mini-break down in the tie-break, things looked bleak for him. But he rallied, broke back and then broke again to take the match into a third set.

The crucial moment came when Griekspoor was broken in the third game of the third set. Bellier had his nose in front for the first time, and was clearly determined not to let the advantage slip. Another break took the pressure off him. and he was able to clinch the win on his second match point.

Batuista-Agut v Bellier Prediction and Tip
