Reilly Opelka is coming to Wimbledon with an 0-2 record on grass and generally bed performances on the surface. It’s nothing unusual for Opelka who has never been that great on grass but he’s certainly better than he showed this year.
To be completely fair he did not try that hard in those matches mostly looking to experience the surface more than anything. We should expect a much more motivated Opelka at this event and to start he’ll have an opponent that he should beat on every surface including clay.
The problem with Opelka is the low bounce of the ball which makes it quite hard for him to return it due to his height. He moves okay on grass and the serve is a major weapon but he has to find a solution for those deep returns that might come his way.
He played in the 3rd round at Wimbledon in 2019 so he needs to find some of that form again. I think he will as he will value this event far more than the two he played before.

Taberner’s Grass Unfamiliarity
Carlos Taber is a Spanish player and he is not that familiar or very good on grass. He is coming to Wimbledon with only one match played and it came last week in Mallorca. He lost to a qualifier who is not even ranked inside the top 300 and it basically demonstrated how well he plays on grass.
He’s certainly capable of improving there but there are many things that make it quite hard for him. First is the movement which is not the greatest. Due to that, his position can be quite off and it’s a shame because the forehand can be dangerous despite not being that flat.
Overall the Spaniard can certainly win matches on grass however Opelka present several problems for him. First is the return which will be tested quite a bit and without a good block one, he’ll be in trouble. He only played 3 matches on the grass on all-time so the chance he has a good one is limited.
He’ll try but I don’t see him doing much.
Opelka v Taberner Prediction and Tip
So this matchup is not that interesting on paper. Opelka is the far better player and he will be glad to get a clay specialist in round one. It’s a great chance to finally get that elusive win on the grass and build some confidence moving forward.
He needs to find some form otherwise he’ll be losing his 3rd match in a row and that’s not something you expect to see from a player ranked inside the top 20. Take the American to win in straight sets.
