David Goffin v Radu Albot Head to Head

Goffin has a 4-0 record against the Moldovan, with his latest win coming in straight sets at the ATP Cup in 2020.

All of their first three meetings needed a deciding third set. This will be their second meeting on grass, following Goffin’s win in Halle in 2019.

Goffin Will Need to Find His Feet Quickly

Hit by injuries and poor form, David Goffin struggled to win matches for almost a year. But a title in Marrakech this year was a huge confidence booster for the Belgian, who finished the clay season with a 12-5 record.

Moving on to grass, he didn’t make a great start, falling in the opening round in Halle to Daniil Medvedev. It remains the only grass court tournament that he has featured in in the run up to Wimbledon this year.

Not an ideal preparation, but Goffin has some happy memories from his last appearance in the grass court major. That was in 2019, when the Belgian knocked out Medvedev en route the quarterfinals — his first at Wimbledon. While COVID prevented the event from taking place in 2020, Goffin got injured just before last year’s tournament and was forced to miss out.

The former World no. 7, who has a 6-9 record in ATP finals, is 0-2 in grass court finals. He has a 53.3% win record on the surface but has played just two matches since the 10-3 run on grass in 2019.

With the 31-year-old slowly regaining his lost touch, it will be interesting to see if he can replicate his clay court form on grass. He will be expected to get through the first round, and will also have the upper hand in the second round against Sebastian Baez or Taro Daniel, but things will get difficult from there on, as he could face third seed Casper Ruud in a potential third round contest.

Albot Comes Through Qualifiers

While Goffin has not played much on grass courts, his opponent in the first round, Radu Albot has played as many as 11 matches on the surface this season, albeit seven of those have been qualifying matches and one at the Challenger level.

The Moldovan has won all seven of those qualifying matches, with the last three earning him a place in the main draw at Wimbledon.

Albot defeated Italy’s Roberto Marcora 6-1, 6-4 in the first qualifying round and then brushed aside America’s Michael Mmoh 6-3, 6-4 in the second qualifier.

In the third qualifying round against Austria’s Sebastian Ofner, Albot lost the first set, but rebounded to win the contest 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.

This will be Albot’s sixth appearance at Wimbledon. His best was a run to the third round in 2018. Since then he has been knocked out in the opening rounds in 2019 and 2021. He had also come through the qualifiers at the Australian Open and then gone on to reach the third round. Can he do the same at the All England Club?

Goffin v Albot Prediction and Tip

Although Goffin is a bit underprepared for the tournament, he will be relying on his past experience to progress to the next round.
