Serena Returns to Competitive Tennis

Technically, Serena Williams had returned to tennis last week with a couple of doubles matches at Eastbourne International where she partnered with Ons Jabeur and reached the semifinals.

It was Jabeur’s injury that forced the pair to pull out of the competition but by then Serena had given enough signs she is feeling as well as she could coming in after a 12-month layoff.

It was at Wimbledon last year where Serena had opted to retire from her first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, after having started off with a heavy strapping on her thigh in that encounter. Slipping in the fifth and the seventh game of the first set, she opted not to continue and retired from the match in tears.

Serena will now hope she can return to the site of not just that unfortunate retirement but also that of seven singles title with a realistic chance of adding to her majors victories.

It won’t be easy given the kind of form some of the other players – like Iga Swiatek – have shown but first things first, and it’s about getting her first singles win in over a year under her belt.

Tan Coming off Gaiba Semifinal

Tan isn’t much of a grass-courter herself, having never won a match on this surface before the start of this season.

Having played only in her first qualifier last year, she had made the second qualifying round at Wimbledon but was knocked out there. And this season, Tan was sent packing from the first round of the Rosmalen Open by Tamara Zidansek, losing a three-setter.

It was at the Gaiba Open, a WTA125 event where Tan finally opened her account on grass.

In fact she won three in a row to reach the semifinal, before getting undone by Alison van Uytvanck in the last four.

She now faces Serena Williams, one of the biggest names ever in tennis – if not the biggest – and will hope she can put up a strong showing even if she cannot actually win.

Williams v Tan Prediction and Tip

Williams starts off a favourite but one must keep in mind this will be her first singles match in a while – and it would different from playing doubles. Expect Tan to put up some fight with the pressure squarely sitting on Serena’s shoulders.
