Anhelina Kalinina’s finest grass-court season of her career culminates with a main draw debut at Wimbledon. The Ukrainian has failed to navigate the qualifying rounds in each of her previous four visits to SW19, losing more recently at last year’s edition in the final round to Vitalia Diatchenko.
Kalinina has played some superb tennis this year, which perhaps explains why she has attained a career-high ranking of World No. 35.
The 25-year-old is renowned for her clay-court prowess having reached two quarterfinals this year including her biggest at WTA 1000 in Madrid where she knocked out two Grand Slam champions in Sloane Stephens and Garbine Muguruza.
Kalinina has maintained that good form on the grass where she made her first quarterfinal on the surface at Eastbourne. She notched a rare Top 10 win over Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the process.

Bondar First Pro Win On Grass
Unlike Kalinina, Anna Bondar arrives at Wimbledon in possibly her worst run of form this season. Bondar though will also be making her main draw debut at the grass-court slam where she has previously failed in the qualifying stage twice in her career.
The 25-year-old Hungarian has played at one warm-up tournament before this, losing in the first round of Bad Homburg to Ann Li.
Bondar’s shoddy record on grass (where she has never won a match on the professional circuit) will make her an overwhelming underdog in her Wimbledon debut. But on the bright side, this is her third successive main draw appearance at Grand Slam level having qualified for both the Australian Open and French Open.
Her terrific 2021 season has significantly vaulted her ranking status. Will she upstage Kalinina?
