Shuai Zhang v Misaki Doi Head to Head

Three previous matches have been played between Zhang and Doi in the main draws of WTA events. Zhang leads 2-1 with their last meeting in Strasbourg last year resulting in a straight-set win for the Chinese player.

Zhang Hoping to Have Recovered from Injury

It was turning out to be a solid grass court season for Zhang but an untimely injury does put a question-mark over her chances at Wimbledon this year.

Having reached the quarterfinal of the Nottingham Open, Zhang proved that was no flash in the pan with an even better showing at Birmingham. Wins over Dayana Yastremska and Sorana Cirstea helped her fly into the title-decider where she met Beatriz Haddad Maia.

And despite having 8/5 underdog odds associated with her to win the title, she fought tooth and nail in the first set.

However, a back injury forced Zhang to retire from the match and the worry now is whether she has recovered fully from it.

While she now faces an opponent who is ranked 100th in the world – and that’s so much better than when she had to take on Elena Rybakina before the draw was reshuffled – Zhang will need to feel at her best to take Doi down.

Doi Hasn’t Won a Match Since Indian Wells

If momentum was ever a thing, Doi is so out of it that she might find it difficult to get past even a half-fit Zhang in this opener.

Because the last time Doi won a competitive match at any level was in March at the Indian Wells Open. Since then, she has lost seven matches in a row.

Yep, that’s how starkly underprepared Doi is coming into this opening encounter.

The Japanese player, once ranked 30th in the world, featured in one tournament on grass – at Bad Homburg – and lost in the first and the only round of qualifiers there. Still making it to the main draw as a lucky loser, Doi was sent packing one more time by Greet Minnen.

It does seem unlikely Doi would do too much damage here either.

Zhang v Doi Prediction and Tip

While Zhang’s back remains a question-mark, she shouldn’t have a lot of other worries against a player struggling for form and confidence. Expect a straight-set win.
