Serena Williams v Eugenie Bouchard Head to Head
These two players have featured against each other on two previous occasions, but the last time they played each other was in 2014. It was also the year in which Bouchard had stormed into contention to win her first ever Grand Slam title, losing at the Wimbledon final. She was beaten by Serena 6-1, 6-1 in the round-robin stage of the WTA Finals.
In a previous meeting in 2013, Bouchard had managed to take a set off Serena before losing the encounter.
Serena off to a Flier this Season
All eyes were on Serena at the start of the season after she had ended the previous year at the US Open, losing an ill-contested final against Naomi Osaka. Since then, he has come back like the way champions usually do.
At the Hopman Cup, her first tournament this season, she led USA to three singles wins in the round-robin stage of the competition, dropping just one set in the process to Belinda Bencic.
And then there was that first round win on Tuesday here in Melbourne, where she ran past Tatjana Maria, 6-0, 6-2, in double-quick time, needing just 49 minutes to book her place in round two of the tournament.
Can Bouchard Give an Account of Her New Self?
Bouchard, who was a semi-finalist at the 2014 Australian Open, arguably her best year in tennis, went into a tailspin as far as her tennis career was concerned before her comeback last season. This was after she was knocked out of the top 100 in the rankings last year, before coming back towards the end of the year with a semi-final appearance at the Luxembourg Open.
But her biggest change came earlier this year where she finally won a WTA title for the first time since May 2014, although it came in the doubles. At that same tournament in Auckland, she went through to the quarter-finals before losing.
And then came her first round win against Shuai Peng, running riot against her wild-card opposition, before winning 6-2, 6-1. Now, she is up against a big legend of the game and a solid performance, irrespective of the result, could play a big part for the rest of the season.
Williams v Bouchard – Who Will Win?
It wouldn’t come across as a big surprise if we said Williams would win this comfortably but we also believe Bouchard could show some spark and even push the American into a tie-breaker.
