Wimbledon 2022 Day 1 Live Blog

5.30 pm local time

Alcaraz was expected to go deep into the tournament and given Djokovic a bit of a fight by the looks of things. Here he is struggling to get going, down two sets to one against Jan-Lennard Struff. In the fourth, we are still on serve with Struff serving at 3-4.

On the other hand, it’s 6-6 in the final set in the match between Hurkacz and Fokina, while Raducanu has just won the first set against van Uytvanck despite going into the match as an underdog.

Also one set apiece between Isner and Couacaud.

4.30 pm local time

Play has resumed on the outside courts as well as the rain has receded. It’s one set all between Alcaraz and Struff and 2-2 in the third, so that looks like it going down to the wire.

Meanwhile Emma Raducanu has taken to court for her opening match against Alison van Uytvanck while Hubert Hurkacz is serving to make it two sets apiece. After a couple of tie-breakers, Casper Ruud is having a slightly easier time in the third against Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

4 pm local time

In the end, Djokovic finds a way to get past Kwon but not before he drops a set. Cameron Norrie has also gone past Pablo Andujar in straight sets but over at Court 1, Carlos Alcaraz has dropped the first set to Jan-Lennard Struff and leads 6-5 in the second but on serve.

3.30 pm local time

Djokovic has managed to pull back and take a two sets to one lead but Kwon isn’t going away in a hurry as he continues to fight hard in the fourth.

Meanwhile, over at Court 1, Jan-Lennard Struff has taken the first set against the fifth seeded Carlos Alcaraz while Cameron Norrie is 5-3 up in the third set against Pablo Andujar after winning the first two.

3 pm local time

Wow. Never saw this coming but Djokovic has lost the second set to Kwon, it’s one set apiece now!

Also, Hurkacz has come back from match-points down to break back in the third set and is 5-5 against Fokina before the play got suspended.

A few more results have come in now, with Quentin Halys having overcome a first set loss to defeat Benoit Paire in four and Frances Tiafoe running through Andrea Vavassori in straight sets.

2.30 pm local time

Maja Chwalinska has caused bit of an upset with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Katerina Siniakova while Tommy Paul has overcome Verdasco in straight sets.

Djokovic has taken the first set against Kwon while Fokina is two sets to love up against Hubert Hurkacz in another surprise of the day. In the meantime Anhelina Kalinina has overcome the loss of the first set to send Anna Bondar out 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

2.10 pm local time

Riske has been joined by Ons Jabeur and Lesia Tsurenko in round two of the competition with all three registering fairly comfortable opening round victories. Riske dropped six games, Tsurenko five and Jabeur ran through to a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Meanwhile Djokovic was a break down against Kwon but now 5-3 in the opening set.

1.50 pm local time

Alison Riske has become the first player to move into the second round with her 6-2, 6-4 win over In-Albon in a match lasting an hour and six minutes. Over at Court 3, Davidovich Fokina has just taken the first set against Hubert Hurkacz while Jabeur is on her way to a routine opening win as well.

1.30 pm local time

The rains have receded and players everywhere have resumed action. Over at Court 1, Jabeur has just taken the first set against Bjorklund easily, while Novak Djokovic has taken to court for his opening round match against Soon-woo Kwon at Centre Court.

In other updates, Tommy Paul is two sets to love up against Verdasco, Ugo Humbert has taken the first set against Tomas Etcheverry, Bondar has scalped the opening set in a surprise result against Anhelina Kalinina, Bedene is 6-4, 1-1 against Marterer, while Munar is also a set up against Monteiro.

Mannarino, Rosol and Tiafoe have all won their opening sets as well with Basilashvili at the receiving end of that against Rosol.

1 pm local time

Court 1 action kick-starts with Ons Jabeur facing off against Mariam Bjorklund even as play continues to remain suspended everywhere else because of rain.

12.30 pm local time

It continues to remain suspended as the rain keeps coming down. The weather forecast for the next few hours isn’t that great but stay tuned given we know how fickle it can get at times!

Of course, play at the Centre Court and Court 1 will continue as usual because of the retractable roof and that starts at 1.30 pm and 1 pm local time respectively.

11.40 am local time

Play has been suspended because of weather.

11.30 am local time

Cameron Norrie has gotten off to a flier against Pablo Andujar winning the first set to love at Court 2. Tommy Paul leads Fernando Verdasco 4-1, Alison Riske is on the verge of winning the first set against Ylena In-Albon while Jaume Munar is serving for the set against Thiago Monteiro at 5-2.

Little known Maja Chwalinska has also crushed Katerina Siniakova 6-0 in the first set, while Lesia Tsurenko leads Jodie Burrage 4-2.

In the meantime, Benoit Paire has also won the first set against fellow Frenchman Quentin Halys.

11 am local time

Players are walking out to their respective courts. Cameron Norrie takes on Pablo Andujar at Court 2, Hubert Hurkacz is up against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at Court 3, while Casper Ruud has walked out to face Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Court 12.

Some of the other first round matches in action right now include local player Jodie Burrage facing Lesia Tsurenko, Tommy Paul taking on Fernando Verdasco, Anhelina Kalinina playing Anna Bondar.

Preview

64 men and women will take to court for their first round matches as the Wimbledon 2022 kick-starts on Monday, June 27.

Djokovic will be up against Korea’s Soon-woo Kwon in what could be a straightforward opener for the Serb as he looks to make it his 21st Grand Slam title.

Following him on centre court will be Emma Raducanu who is battling injury and form concerns as she hopes to avoid an early loss to Alison van Uytvanck. Andy Murray will be the second Briton to take to centre court as he takes on Australia’s James Duckworth.

Court 1 action will have Ons Jabeur facing Sweden’s Mariam Bjorklund and again the world number three has some injury concerns for her. The man for the future, Carlos Alcaraz will be next to take to court there as he faces Jan-Lennard Struff while former Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber will be up against Kristina Mladenovic.

Another British player, the men’s number one from the UK, Cameron Norrie will be first to take to court 2 when he takes on Pablo Andujar. And if it all goes to plan, Anett Kontaveit should be on court next in no time as she faces Bernarda Pera.

In what could be the match of the day, Stan Wawrinka has a chance to cause some mayhem when he faces the 10th seeded Jannik Sinner before the matches on that court get rounded off with Maria Sakkari taking on Zoe Hives.

Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz, Danielle Collins and Belinda Bencic will be some of the other players who will be in action on day 1 of this year’s Wimbledon.
